Overtime we have noticed that it takes a bit of an effort to convince some patients to come in for their cleaning, you would have thought everyone wants clean teeth and a perfect smile.

In the past month we took a survey on patients who came in for their routine dental cleaning, the Question was “HOW DID YOU KNOW YOU NEEDED DENTAL CLEANING?”

Below is a graphical representation of their response.

From a cohort of 100;

6% came in because they had visible stains on their teeth and felt uncomfortable.

15% just felt they should do it (no specific reason).

18% had other dental concerns and a cleaning was recommended.

61% had our reminder system  to thank (we call you 6 months after your cleaning to remind you of your next session).

WHEN DO YOU NEED DENTAL CLEANING

If you have good oral hygiene habits and a healthy mouth, your dentist and dental therapist will recommend professional teeth cleaning at least twice a year. Many dental insurance policies will cover for two cleanings per year, but few people take full advantage of this benefit.

Smokers and those with high intake of caffeine content should consider having their dental cleaning gone every 4 months.

Some indicators that you are due for dental cleaning include:

  1. Bleeding gums
  2. Halitosis (persistent bad breath)
  3. Unpleasant taste in mouth
  4. Puffy and tender gums
  5. Teeth feels scaly against tongue
  6. Visible stains (in extreme cases)
  7. Terrible morning breath
  8. Chalky/sandy feel in the mouth

You could employ the help of other reagents such as the “disclosing tablets” which works on a colour change mechanism, indicating the presence of NEW or OLD plaque.
