Your teeth may not be top of the list of things you’ll think about when you decide to have a fast. But it’s a good idea to keep them in mind. You’ll want to keep up your dental routines, so that fasting doesn’t have a negative impact on your oral health.

Please consider these pointers before/during/after your fasting exercise;

1. VISIT THE DENTIST BEFORE YOU COMMENCE.

The last thing you want during this period is a dental emergency, so if you haven’t seen your dentist recently or you currently have an existing dental condition, we advise you visit the dentist for a general checkup or to complete your treatment.

2. BRUSH YOUR TEETH BEFORE START OF THE DAY’s FAST AND AFTER BREAK OF FAST.

This is to ensure that you don’t have food particles in your mouth during the day(active fast time) and at night while sleeping, as they would result in plaque build up and ultimately gum diseases and tooth decay.

3. ALL RECOMMEND DENTAL PRODUCTS ARE ESSENTIAL DURING THIS PERIOD.

If you don’t already use dental floss, mouthwash and tongue cleaners, this is the best time to incorporate them into your oral hygiene routine.

Dental floss serves to clean up the remnants of food stuck between the teeth, while mouthwash washes away the bacteria and the tongue cleaners will help keep the mouth fresh as diets on the tongue cause 80% of mouth odor (a major challenge during this period).

4. INCREASE YOUR WATER INTAKE

During the non fasting hours, we advise that you multiply your water consumption; aside from the general health benefits, you are more prone to having a dry mouth during a fast period and so you require sufficient hydration. Drink 2-3 glasses of water after break of fast and before commencement of the day’s fast.

5.PRIORITIES YOUR ORAL HEALTH AS YOU MAKE FOOD CHOICES DURING THIS PERIOD.

As we tend to achieve satisfaction when we break our fast, it is easy to give in to cravings of sticky candies, high sugar containing foods, black tea and tobacco(for smokers).

These food options are not suitable for our teeth and should be avoided.

Increase vegetable and fruit intake, avoid sticky foods, avoid carbonated and sugary drinks.

Lastly, fasting as a spiritual exercise has numerous benefits and no one should have to be exempted due to preventable/manageable health conditions.

Our facilities are always open, do well to contact us for all your dental care services and recommend products.
